About Grass Is Greener
“Grass Is Greener” is Ampersand’s anti-materialistic indie-pop anthem for the new age of the cost of living crisis.
Their own interpretation of the old adage, “The grass is greener on the other side”, this single is a candid, hopeful breakdown of what really makes us dissatisfied with our superficial, fast paced lives, increasingly under pressure. As young adults that can remember the good old days when keyboards cost less than cars, they’re saying “it’s ok”.
We need to adapt. Things are more expensive, but we don’t need things. The more you want, the less fulfilled you find yourself. After all, you can never be satisfied if you only value material possessions.
Ampersand has learned not to waste time always wanting something you can’t have, but to cherish and enjoy what you already have instead.
As Ampersand announces “Grass Is Greener’s” release date, they also celebrate the song’s 1st birthday.
Written in their marathon songwriting sessions for the 2023, and final, Caloundra Music Festival (may it rest in piece), “Grass Is Greener” embodies a stylistic shift from easy listening soulful funk storytelling, to hard hitting, driving pop/rock anthems.
This single grew like grass, in one of the fastest idea to conceptualised song processes the team has ever experienced. This time, the recording process took them towards dipping a toe into the worlds of indie, pop and rock, while still retaining that instantly recognisable Ampersand improvisational flair.
Wanting to showcase another side of their musicality, they’ve mashed these influences together in a completely different combination to create a song that straddles the line between indie, pop and rock while referencing jazz and funk techniques with a dash of that early 80’s sound.
Co-written and arranged by the entire Ampersand team, “Grass Is Greener” features Vocals, Lyrics and Melody by Katie Brown and Isi Semmler, Keyboards and Chords by Jarrod Tutbury, Bass by Jed Green, Drums and Percussion by Orlando Hamilton-Craig and Guitar by featured guest artist Doc Hamilton. Recorded, Engineered and Produced by Scott Mathison and Justin Tresidder at Yama Nui Studios and Mastered by Paul Blakey, this single’s recording was made possible by Noosa Council’s Regional Arts Development Fund.
"The Regional Arts Development Fund is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Noosa Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland”.
“Grass Is Greener” will be available to stream on Spotify, iTunes and wherever you listen to your music from 12am Thursday 17th October 2024.
